For the first time since 1998, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men’s hockey team is headed to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four.
The fifth-ranked Pointers (21-5-2) and fourth-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.) (21-5-2) were tied at 0-0 heading into the third period of their NCAA National Quarterfinal Saturday, March 15, in Mendota Heights, Minn., when UWSP erupted for three goals to come away with a 3-0 victory and advance to the Frozen Four in Lewiston, Maine, this weekend.
The Pointers will face seventh-ranked Oswego State (N.Y.) (22-6-2) in a NCAA Division III National Semifinal at 6:30 p.m. central time Friday, March 21, with the winner to face either top-ranked St. Norbert (26-3-1) or eighth-ranked Geneseo State (N.Y.) (23-6) in the NCAA Division III National Championship Game at 6 p.m. central Saturday, March 22.
“It’s a great accomplishment,” said third-year UWSP men’s hockey head coach Chris Brooks. “It’s been our goal since the start of the season, and any time you can take steps forward to accomplish your goal, it’s rewarding.”
