Schierl won the 138-pound weight class and Duffert finished second at 170 at the Wausau West Sectional Saturday, Feb. 22, as both advanced to state at the Kohl Center in Madison Thursday, Feb. 27, through Saturday, March 1.
Schierl (45-2), the top-ranked wrestler in Division 1 at 138, was set to face 16th-ranked junior Andre’ Mayllen of Baraboo (29-15) in the first round at state at 3 p.m. Thursday, while 10th-ranked Duffert was set to face seventh-ranked senior Duncan Isbister of Cedarburg (43-4) Thursday afternoon.
“Last year I didn’t get to go, so I’m really just excited to get down there and feel the chills of the Kohl Center when I walk out on the mat,” said Schierl.
“Even before high school, this was the goal, to be down in Madison wrestling in February and March,” said Duffert. “Going through what I’ve gone through and being injured last year, there’s really no better feeling than to finally get down there.”
