I don’t think there’s anything illegal about it, but I received a suspicious “offer” in the mail recently. It asked me to sign up for insurance against a break in my water service line – the lateral that runs between my property line near the street and the house.
I’ve never heard of that type of insurance, so the solicitation piqued my interest.
The letter, which told me I didn’t have coverage for a break in my water service line, came from Homeserve USA Repair Management Corporation, which I’ve never heard of either.
The first thing I did was check out the company online. A Better Business Bureau (BBB) site told me Homeserve was not BBB accredited. That alone raised some questions in my mind, although I should note that to receive BBB accreditation, companies must apply for it and pay a fee.
