With a number of key players back from last year, the Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) boys basketball team will look to repeat as Wisconsin Valley Conference (WVC) Champions and make a deep playoff run this season.
The eighth-ranked Panthers (6-1, 3-0) return their top three scorers from last year, when they won their first WVC Title since 2008 and finished 22-3 overall.
In the last week, SPASH knocked off a pair of the top contenders in the conference, as it beat Marshfield (4-3, 2-1) 60-45 at home Friday, Dec. 13, and then won at Wisconsin Rapids (4-4, 1-2) 71-42 Tuesday, Dec. 17, to sit alone atop the WVC standings heading into its matchup at home against Merrill (5-2, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20.
“I thought we were maybe a little sluggish out of the gates the first couple of weeks of practice, but they’ve been real focused and real locked in recently on just trying to get better every day,” said SPASH boys basketball head coach Scott Anderson. “We’ve been making steps, and I hope we keep taking them.”
