George Rogers occasionally related that he thought I wrote too long, stick with 500 words and you’ll have a good piece … George was the journalist not an English major.
To admit at the outset it is a touch odd for a dirtball type to be affected to his heart at the passing of a newspaper guy, after all, what did a newspaper guy know about farming, or vice versa?
Also to admit that George would not want to be written about in public, a combination of shyness and a hyper sense of common humanity. Spectacle is for poets and English majors, not journalists.
I came to care about George Rogers for several reasons, the first of which is selfish. Was George who 39 years ago decided a dirtball could find an occasional slot in his newspaper and write about stuff the editor didn’t personally care for. Not many editors of any stripe are capable of that transfiguration.
