There is nothing quite like a road trip. Most of us couldn’t bear the thought of sitting together with someone on a couch, staring out the window together while making conversation for a whole 20 minutes, much less three or four hours. But when we are in a car, it’s quite different.
There is something about being in a car that lends itself to all sorts of magical occurrences. It doesn’t matter where you’re going or what age you are, interesting events always seem to happen while on the road, a mystical sort of process that bonds the participants in a special way.
When I was a teen, road trips were amazing. It was a whole day or weekend without the parents breathing down your neck and having to answer to them for anything. You could be silly and spontaneous and not have to be responsible for explaining any of it. It was a freeing experience … if you didn’t let things get out of hand.
