George Rogers, a lifetime journalist, former Stevens Point Journal editor and Portage County Gazette co-founder, died at the age of 85 after more than 60 years in the newspaper business.
Rogers was a quiet, unassuming, humble person who had a gift of eloquence with the written word, an ability to write so much in so few words. A Stevens Point native, he had a vast knowledge about the history of the community that he would weave into his stories.
He was born into a newspaper family. His grandfather, Edward D. Glennon, started the first version of The Portage County Gazette as a weekly newspaper on July 17, 1878. That paper merged with the Stevens Point Daily Journal in 1923 after Glennon’s death, and the Glennon family retained part-ownership in the Journal.
