Often, when we intend to teach, we also learn. That has been the experience of those involved in the YMCA’s Community Garden.
This community outreach project has turned into a significant source of fresh produce to area food pantries and children served by YMCA programs. It has also been a rewarding collaboration, a meaningful volunteer opportunity and a hands-on learning tool.
It began in 2010 when the YMCA received a grant to create a community garden. YMCA leaders connected with Dan Goulet, a recently retired University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point professor, who is as meticulous about building structures and recording details as he is passionate about gardening.
