I came upon a Reuters news article about the menu at a California “bugfest” earlier this year. Tempura-battered tarantula was a featured item. I’ll get to that later.
But the odd foods at the festival – at least to the Western way of thinking – took me back to my old radio partner, Pat Shanahan, who delighted in reporting sometimes disgusting but mostly peculiar menus at his make-believe high school – RASH – Rudolph Area Senior High, and Highfalutin Technical College. It also brought to mind my earlier morning radio host, Phil Murphy.
I should tell you two things about RASH. The government listed Rudolph as our radio station’s community of license, so Rudolph seemed to be a logical choice for a fictional school. Shanahan created RASH, a takeoff of the acronym SPASH, Stevens Point Area Senior High School.
Back in the 1990s, each weekday morning about 6:45, Pat would broadcast the RASH school lunch menu.
