The Portage County Board of Supervisors Tuesday, Aug. 20, approved a contract with Waupaca County to allow a guaranteed minimum of 35 beds for 365 days per year at $32 per bed, starting Jan. 1, 2014. That will amount to a total of $408,800.
“The new contract saves money and travel time,” said Stevens Point Sheriff John Charewicz. “If the price changes after the two years we’ll go back to Lincoln County.”
Portage County had been contracting with Lincoln County to house inmates because of overcrowded conditions in the Portage County facility, and with Clark County before that, switching jails in an effort to reduce costs.
Traveling to Lincoln County costs about twice as much in travel time and fuel as going to Waupaca County, Charewicz said, and Clark County had been more expensive for those same factors.
