MARINETTE- Despite suffering a loss in the AAA State Championship Game, the Plover Black Sox American Legion Baseball team is heading to the Great Lakes National Regional in Terre Haute, Ind., this weekend.
After losing to Ash Port (30-7) 7-2 Thursday, Aug. 1, to drop to 1-1 at the double-elimination tournament at Pedersen Park in Marinette, the top-ranked Black Sox (39-8) came through with back-to-back wins to advance to the State Championship Game and earn one of the tournament’s two berths to the National Regional.
Needing to beat Ash Port twice Sunday, Aug. 4, to win the State Title, Plover won 13-6 in the first game, but then fell 2-0 in the second game to finish as the State Runner-up.
The Black Sox were scheduled to open the Great Lakes Regional against Napoleon (41-17), the Ohio State Champion, at 9 a.m. central time Thursday, Aug. 8.
“It’s a weird feeling, losing the State Championship, but knowing you can still play another week or so with your guys,” said second baseman Cale Pieczynski. “But it was a tough one to lose; we don’t really get shut out too much.”
“We get to move on, and that’s huge,” said Plover manager Wayne Sankey after the State Championship Game. “We’ve got a little bit of a bad feeling right now because we wanted to walk out of here State Champions, but the nice thing is our season continues, and we’re going to see what we can do at the national level.”
