“Thou shalt not steal.”
I learned that Commandment early in life, and have tried to follow it. But sometimes it’s hard to decide whether something we take is really “stealing.”
For example, is it stealing to take the little shampoo or lotion bottles or extra bar of soap from a hotel room? You can quite easily argue that they’re part of what you paid for, and therefore, belong to you so it’s not stealing.
Can you make the same argument about the towels? Most of us would say no to that – making off with the towels is thievery. But there’s a significant number of Americans who take hotel linens. The website Hotels.com surveyed guests and found that Americans and Chinese were close to the bottom in honesty rankings, just ahead of the worst group – Colombians.
