Dr. William R. “Doc” Ruff, 83, Montello, a former Stevens Point resident and veterinarian and the father of a Stevens Point woman, died after a battle with cancer Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at The Residences on Forest Lane in Montello.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at the Buffalo Community Bible Church, 4090 14th Road, Montello), with Pastor Ron Larson officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, until the service.
Memorials are preferred to The Residences on Forest Lane, 253 Forest Lane, Montello, WI 53949.

Dr. Ruff was born Feb. 21, 1930, a son of the late William R. and Lela (Williams) Ruff. He grew up in Stevens Point and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1947.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State College in 1954 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University in 1956.
He was married to Gwen Simonds 62 years ago.
He began private veterinary practice in Stevens Point and continued in Markesan where he specialized in large animal practice until 1985 when he accepted a position as district veterinarian for the state of Wisconsin.
He was involved with the 4-H, county fairs, the state fair and supported those entering veterinary practice. He formally retired in 1997 but continued to offer service and advice to farmers and pet owners for many years.
In later years, he was involved in showing buckskin quarter horses and raising a small herd of beef cattle.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Jennifer (Daniel) Lowenberg, Verona, Jacquelyn (John) Wetzel, Waunakee, William R. (Nancy) Ruff IV, Sturgeon Bay, and Pamela (Kevin) Lake, Stevens Point; one sister, Lucretia Nyberg, Bloomington, Minn.; and nine grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Zei.
