The shop is in the process of collecting and fixing donated bicycles from police departments in the surrounding area, said Tom Baehr, who has been leading the project for Justiceworks Ltd. and is the deferred prosecution program coordinator of Justiceworks.
Shifting Gears is temporarily stationed in a red warehouse at 2116 Wood St., where Shaurette Street meets Wood Street.
Upon receiving bicycle donations, Baehr and his volunteers have been stripping the bicycles down to their steel frames, checking their condition and replacing parts as needed. The goal is to fix the bicycles enough “so people can buy a bike and safely ride away on it.”
One of the main goals of Shifting Gears is to be a community resource. Baehr said, “it is a place where people can go to have access to inexpensive services, transportation, volunteer opportunities and educational opportunities.”
