Shelly Higgins, an organizer of the event, said that numbers have dwindled in recent years and they are trying to expand it back to what it used to be.
“We are completely revamping our picnic this year,” said Shelly. “Our goal this year is to make the community picnic a family event that the local community will look forward to for years to come.”
Willy Higgins, Shelly’s husband and picnic chairman, said it was a fireman’s picnic before it was a community picnic, but as the community got smaller and the Junction City Fire Department merged into the Rudolph Fire Department, the picnic transformed into a community-organized event.
That was eight years ago, now Willy and Shelly decided it was time to add more attractions and make the picnic a longer event.
