Mr. Houdek was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Berwyn, Ill., a son of the late Ladislav and Alvina (Snyder) Houdek. He attended Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, completed his service and was honorably discharged in 1947.
After service he attended Highlands University in New Mexico. He then moved back to Illinois and enrolled in the Illinois Institute of Technology to study engineering. Shortly thereafter he completed a series of courses in fine turf management at the University of Massachusetts.
He was married to Virginia Stark on June 5, 1953, at a home service in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
He was an entrepreneur with Houdek Golf Course Design and Construction. A few courses he built included Glacier Woods Golf Course in Iola, Greenwood Hills in Wausau and Mascoutin Country Club in Berlin.
In 1975, he bought his own land and moved his family to Amherst. He retired from the golf course business at the age of 72.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathleen (Peter) Connolly, Wayne, Ill., and Karen (Michael) Glodowski, Amherst; one son, John Jr., Amherst; one sister, Violet Steinke, Sorrento, Fla.; one brother, Ladd Earl Houdek, Saline, Mich.; two grandchildren; one stepgrandson; and two great-stepgrandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald and Bruce.
