I read Ken Blomberg’s piece about the ongoing work of restoring the passenger pigeon using the now-known science of genetic engineering. That this rebirth is even in the realm of possibility has got the environmental community discussing the ethics of “bringing species back.”
The implications on resource management if a species can be stored in a DNA drawer someplace. To the end they aren’t technically “extinct” and if “saved” in this way, do we have to amend our resource use to save critical habitat because a threatened species won’t go extinct. Just saved in a refrigerator someplace, saved because we have the “Tinker Toy” parts.
