The 34th-annual Showtime will feature songs, special effects and a tribute to The Beatles. The Stevens Point Area Senior High School’s (SPASH) annual end-of-the-year collaboration concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2, to Saturday, May 4, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5.
The theme of this year’s Showtime, “There will be an answer… Let it Be,” is taken from The Beatles song “Let it Be,” which is the closing song of the show. The students who are involved chose this song from the list of Showtime choir songs they are performing, said Deb Pionek, one of the show’s directors and a choir teacher at SPASH. Pionek also performed in the first Showtime held in 1979.
“The song was chosen because it leaves the audience with a message of hope,” she said.
The show will have a variety of songs from different artists, including country, bluegrass, pop, classic rock, alternative, hip hop and a capella. All of the performers in the show are students, including instrumentalists.
“Showtime is an important event, because it gives the students a chance to build leadership skills, such as teamwork, cooperation, responsibility, problem-solving and perseverance,” Pionek said. “In addition, Showtime gives the SPASH music students a chance to display their talents for the public. They compare it to their ‘big game’ of the year.”
Some features that are new to this year’s Showtime include visual effects. This year, the stage will be open, with no side wings.
“This setup creates a really neat visual effect,” Pionek said.
Most of the songs in the show this year are of a faster tempo, and the number of songs has been limited to 28 compared to last year’s 32, so the length of the show will be shorter, she said.
The show is directed by Pionek; Luke Adsit, the choir director at P.J. Jacobs Junior High; and Chris Johnson, the sound engineer.
The Dave Carlson is technical director of this year’s Showtime, Nolan Pawleski is the stage crew head and Celia Sweet is the choreographer.
