The ninth annual Portage County Literacy Council (PCLC) UnScrabble event can put a whole new meaning into family game night.
The event, which raises funds for the PCLC’s educational programs, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, April 11 at the Memories of Plover Banquet Hall, 2811 Plover Springs Drive, Plover.
“The fundraiser helps offset the cost of teachers and materials for the adult learners who participate in our programs,” said Mary Kneebone, the executive director of the PCLC. “It also allows us to offer classes and tutoring free to any adult in Portage County who needs help with reading, writing, math and English fluency skills.”
This year, UnScrabble will be located at Memories so the event can better accommodate the teams with more space. Each team will have its own table. The event is popular with the community and continues to expand, said Kneebone.
“We had 28 teams last year and hope to increase it,” she said, adding that UnScrabble raised just over $10,000 at last year’s event.
Kneebone said PCLC served 139 adults last year and it hopes to increase that number.
