The Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) boys track and field team will look to continue its run of success this season.
The Panthers return a number of key letterwinners from last year’s team that won the Wisconsin Valley Conference (WVC) Outdoor Title for the seventh time in the last eight years.
After competing in the Madison West Relays Saturday, March 30, SPASH will host the WVC Indoor Meet at UWSP Tuesday, April 9, as it looks to defend its WVC Indoor Title.
“There’s only been two meets so far, so we’re trying to find where we’re at,” said SPASH boys track head coach Kevin Streveler of his team. “We’re trying to improve, trying to get in shape, and the kids have responded very well.
“They’re excited and are aspiring to have a really good season,” said Streveler.
Last year the Panthers won their eighth WVC Indoor Title in the last nine years and their 10th Outdoor Title in the last 12 years, while they finished second behind D.C. Everest in the WVC Relay Meet.
“We have about 30 returning letterwinners from last year, and a majority of them got varsity time last year,” said Streveler. “We’re real hopeful that those guys can be leaders for our younger guys and do very well this year.”
SPASH returns a pair of qualifiers from last year’s State Meet in senior Michael Larson (1,600 run) and junior Sean Van Helden (high jump), while senior Zach Pozorski (400 dash) qualified as a sophomore.
“We’re hoping for big things from Michael,” said Streveler. “Sean has had a very good start to this season, going 6-4 already, so we’re real excited about what he can do.
“And Zach is a do-it-all kind of guy, he can do the 100, 200 and 400 (dashes),” said Streveler. “Hopefully we can get him back to the State Meet, along with a lot of other guys.”
