Is there a gun violence problem in this country? Does the sun rise in the east and set in the west? Milwaukee had 86 homicides in 2012, and 69 involved guns. Since 2008, 24 children under the age of 13 have been shot in Milwaukee. In 2011 and 2012, Milwaukee had more than a thousand non-fatal shootings. And that’s just one American city.
What’s going to be done about it? Are they going to take away your deer rifle? Not a chance. Millions of guns are out there and Congress or the state Legislature isn’t going to confiscate them or prevent you from buying a hunting weapon.
Assault weapons, if they can agree on a definition, may become illegal, along with a ban on multi-cartridge magazines, but that’s as far as it’s apt to go. The answer, if there is one, is to somehow convince people that a gun is a tool for hunting or target shooting, not something for blowing away people.
