The 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball team claimed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Title outright with a convincing 68-34 win over UW-Eau Claire (10-15, 4-12) in the regular season finale at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse Saturday, Feb. 16.
UWSP received the top seed and an opening round bye in this week’s WIAC Tournament, as it was set to host fifth-seeded UW-Platteville (18-8, 10-6) in a WIAC Semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21.
With a win, the Pointers would then host either ninth-ranked UW-Whitewater (21-4, 13-3) or UW-Stout (20-6, 11-5) in the WIAC Championship Game at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament on the line.
“We can control how hard we play, how physically and mentally tough we play, and also that people cannot score easily and have to earn everything they get,” said UWSP men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling, whose program has seven WIAC Tournament Titles. “Our guys believe in that, and they know that has worked out well seven times in the WIAC Tournament.
“And with everything that’s at stake with that automatic qualifier, we need our Pointer fans to come out and support us and help create a home-court atmosphere that is very difficult for our opponents,” said Semling.
