A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Howard Hintzman officiating.
Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20, until the service.
A memorial fund has been established at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. The family will also be donating to the Covenant House and the local Salvation Army.
Mr. Newell was born on April 21, 1923, in Belmore, Ohio, a son of the late Dwight and Agnes Newell.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was employed by the Ohio Bell Telephone Company for 41 years.
He was married to Charlotte Jane Norton on May 25, 1945.
Due to her health they moved to Stevens Point in 2002 to be near their daughter. She died on March 9, 2008.
He was an avid square dancer. He was a member of Wheel & Deal Square Dance Club and a leader in the central Wisconsin square dance community.
He was active in the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church community.
Survivors include one daughter, Janet (Jim) Carter, Stevens Point; three grandchildren, Jay (Jennie) Carter, Prairie Village, Kan., Jaime (Brian) Houghton, Au Train, Mich., and Julie (Jason Lutz) Carter, Cottage Grove, three great-grandchildren, Anna Carter and A.J. and Rex Lutz; two sisters; nieces; and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Kent; and three sisters.
