For the first time in six years, the Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) boys hockey team is the Wisconsin Valley Conference (WVC) Champions.
With the WVC Title on the line in the regular season finale, sophomore forward Austin Haas scored off a rebound in the second period to give the third-ranked Panthers (19-3-1, 10-1) a 1-0 lead over eighth-ranked and last season’s State Runner-Up Wausau West (14-9-1, 9-2) at K.B. Willett Arena Thursday, Feb. 6.
Junior forward Jake Jaworski then added a goal in the third period to seal the 2-0 win and the Conference Title for SPASH, which received an opening-round bye in the playoffs and will now host seventh-seeded Pacelli (9-11) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at K.B. Willett Arena.
“It feels great,” said sophomore goaltender Nathan Siclovan of the win. “Conference champs, it’s nice. And it will give us a big boost heading into the playoffs.”
“It’s great,” said fifth-year SPASH boys hockey head coach Dan Francis. “The kids worked their buns off all year long to get to this point, and they deserve it.
“It’s a long season, and to come out as the Conference Champion, it’s nice for these kids,” said Francis.
