Sam Wood, 83, Menomonie, father of a Stevens Point man, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2013.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Menomonie. Private family services will be held at First Congregational Church in Menomonie.
Memorials should be made in his name to the University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW) Foundation – Sam Wood Scholarship or a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Wood was born May 18, 1929, in Oelwein, Iowa, a son of the late Sam and Lucile (Smith) Wood.
He was married to Lois Iverson on Aug. 19, 1950, in Bricelyn, Minn.
He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Sicily during the Korean War and was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation ribbon for his service.
He completed his undergraduate degree at the Iowa State Teachers College, now known as the University of Northern Iowa. He later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Iowa, followed by post-graduate studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
He had a long career in education, starting with teaching positions in several Iowa cities. He then became the guidance director for the Fond du Lac, Wis., school district. In 1964 he began his career at UW-Stout as the assistant registrar. He retired in 1991 as the assistant chancellor for Student Services/Dean of Students. At that time the Stout Student Association medallion was renamed the Samuel E. Wood Medallion award.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mark (Julie), Stevens Point, Dale (Robin), and Roger (Heidi); one daughter, Diane (David) Flowers; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Stucky.
