Barbara A. (Rehberg) Shaver, 90, a former Amherst area resident, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in Ohio.
A Memorial Mass will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 26, St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Fancher. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church from 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, until the Mass.
Memorial contributions can be made in her name to St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
Mrs. Shaver was born and grew up in Milwaukee.
She joined the U.S. Navy in November of 1942 and served during World War II. She was in the second class of Waves out of Great Lakes Naval Station, Chicago, Ill.
She was married to Eugene Shaver in April of 1944 at Sun Valley Ski Resort Hotel where they were stationed. He died in May of 1994.
When her husband was later assigned to San Francisco, she left the Navy and returned to Milwaukee to live with her parents.
They lived in Tennessee and New England before her husband accepted an assignment as a deacon at St. Mary of Mount Carmel and St. James Catholic churches in 1988 with the Rev. Robert Pedretti, and they resided at the rectory at St. Mary of Mount Carmel.
During their time at St. Mary of Mount Carmel, she was active as a CCD teacher and lector and served the parishes in many capacities.
She returned to the Milwaukee area in 1995 where she remained active and transported residents to church, appointments and grocery shopping with a sense of service to her new community. She moved to the Cincinnati, Ohio, area in 2009 and into a nursing home in 2011.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Benton; six sons, Michael, Timothy, Kevin, Patrick, Bryan and Paul; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Eugene Jr.
