People planning to celebrate New Year’s Eve at a bar in Portage County will have an option to get home for free, with the Portage County Tavern League (PCTL) expanding its SafeRide program for the holiday.
“All they have to do is ask the bartender to call them a cab,” said Mike Slowsinki, PCTL president and owner of Slo’s Place, Stevens Point.
Between 10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, and 7 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, the PCTL SafeRide program is free. Also, after dropping off SafeRide passengers, the cab will also give a babysitter a ride home as part of the service offered that night.
“We want to keep our customers coming back,” said Slowinski. “New Year’s Eve is one of the busier evenings for us and we just want to make sure everyone gets home safe.”
The PCTL has had a SafeRide program for 18 years. Under its normal rules, a patron pays $10 for the service, and it does not include the ride home for a babysitter.
The New Year’s Eve program is similar to the one the PCTL offered last year. Slowinski said about 200 rides were given under the program last year.
