For only the second time in school history, the Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) wrestling team beat Wisconsin Rapids.
The 10th-ranked Panthers used a pair of pins from freshman Fritz Schierl and sophomore Tyler Hall to help jump out to a 15-0 early against the four-time defending State Champion at the SPASH Fieldhouse on Thursday, Dec. 13.
SPASH then built a 36-9 lead late in the match, as it went on to win 36-25 to knock off Rapids for the first time since 2008.
“They’re obviously not the team they were a couple of years ago. They graduated a ton of guys,” said SPASH wrestling head coach Duane Groshek. “But whether or not they’re down from what they’ve been, they’re still the defending State Champion.
“So it was huge,” said Groshek. “We did some shuffling in our lineup, we asked guys to step up and wrestle up a weight class, and they came through with big wins for us.”
