The Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) boys and girls cross country teams both earned a trip to state, after they won titles at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional at Standing Rocks Park on Saturday, Oct. 20.
Senior Michael Larson won the Individual Title for the boys, who placed seven runners in the Top 12 to cruise to the Sectional Title and advance to state for the 34th time in the last 36 years.
Meanwhile, freshman Autum Shurbert-Hetzel finished second to lead the SPASH girls to the Sectional Title and a trip to the WIAA Division 1 State Meet at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, Sept. 27, for their first appearance since 2007.
“It is special,” said SPASH boys cross country head coach Donn Behnke of going to state. “It’s happened to us so many times that you do tend to expect it, especially with this team. We knew that we were going through (the Sectional).
“But we try to focus on running a good race, which is what the emphasis was,” said Behnke. “We wanted all of our guys to run well, so that we are ready for next week.”
