After being affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) football program for 33 years, John Miech faced his old team for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Now the wide receivers coach at UW-Whitewater, Miech played football at UWSP, served as an assistant coach there, and was the team’s head coach for the last 24 years, before his departure after last season.
On Saturday, fourth-ranked and three-time defending National Champion UW-Whitewater (2-1) led UWSP (1-2) 14-7 in the second quarter at Perkins Stadium in Whitewater, before it scored 20 unanswered points to pull away for a 34-7 victory, and close out what Miech said was a rough week leading up to the game against his former team.
“I want everybody to know, I have not turned my back on the UWSP football program or the community,” said Miech, the all-time winningest football head coach in UWSP history. “But I’m a football coach and they fired me, so what am I supposed to do? Shrivel up and die on the curb?
