Tom Eagon was formally sworn in as judge Wednesday, Aug. 1, in an investiture ceremony in the Circuit Court branch 1 court room – the courtroom in which he will serve as judge – in the County-City Building in Stevens Point.
Judge Thomas Flugaur, Branch 3, made the opening remarks before a full courtroom featuring judges from the 4th District Court of Appeals, neighboring Circuit Court judges, and Judge Frederic Fleishauer, who retired from the Branch 1 seat in November 2011. Also present were Genie Levi and Marti Sowka, wife and daughter of the late Judge James H. Levi, who served in Branch 1 before Fleishauer.
Flugaur said it had been 18 years since there was an investiture ceremony in Portage County, which is when he was installed as a judge. It has been so long that Flugaur said he had to look up what the term meant. It comes from Latin, he said, and means to “dress” or “robe.” In the Circuit Court, it is a ceremony that means taking the oath to uphold the constitution and to apply justice evenly, as well as the donning of the judicial robe.
