Etta Louise Owen, 88, Waukesha, formerly of Stevens Point, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Lippert-Olson Funeral Home in Sheboygan. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Amherst.
Visitation was at the funeral home from 9 a.m. Saturday until the services.
Memorials can be given to the Sheboygan County Historical Society or the Sheboygan County Humane Society.
Ms. Owen was born March 13, 1923, a daughter of the late Dorothy (Hartleb) and Wayne Owen. She was a 1940 graduate of P.J. Jacobs High School in Stevens Point and received a bachelor’s degree in primary education in 1944 from Central State Teacher’s College (now the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point). She attended summer sessions in Madison to complete graduate work toward a master’s degree.
She taught for three years in Medford, before moving to Sheboygan in 1947. She completed 41 years of teaching first grade in 1984.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sheboygan, a 50-year member of Eastern Star 139, and a member of the State Historical Society, Portage County Historical Society and the Sheboygan County Historical Society (and its Service Committee). She was also a member of Sheboygan County Area Retired Teachers, Partners of St. Nicholas Hospital and the American Red Cross.
She did volunteer work at St. Nicholas Hospital’s gift shop and information desk, the Sheboygan County Museum’s service group, and the Red Cross Blood Bank. She was also an election poll worker in Sheboygan’s Ward 4 from 1984 to 2006.
Survivors include one niece, Susan (Frederick) Ellis; and other relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Owen Spink.
