John R. Ellefson, 54, Merritt Island, Fla., son of a Stevens Point couple, died in Kansas, Tuesday, April 10, 2001, of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident on April 9.
A memorial services was held Friday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Stevens Point, with the Rev. Graham West officiating. Burial will be later in Marquette, Mich.
Mr. Ellefson was born Nov. 19, 1946, in Glenwood, Minn., a son of Harry and Janet (Anderson) Ellefson. He attended schools in Fond du Lac, Thief River Falls, Minn., Stevens Point and Marquette, Mich., as the family moved because of his father’s job as a railroad transportation officer with the Soo Line Railroad. He graduated from high school in Marquette, Mich.
He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in math from Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
He was married to Lois Mendelin on Sept. 6, 1968, in Marquette, Mich.
He taught in a high school in Michigan and a junior college in North Carolina before joining the Kennedy Space Center in Florida as a scientific computer programmer in the space shuttle operation in 1977.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Carl and Ryder, both of Merritt Island, Fla.; his parents, Stevens Point; three brothers, Grant, Hudson, Tom (Patty), McFarland, and Gary (Ellinor), Gilbert, Ariz.; two sisters, Barbara (LeRoy) Johnson, Overland Park, Kansas, and Jane (Jed) Malischke, Spooner.
