Katherine W. Rice, 87, Mescal Lakes, Ariz., a former Custer area resident, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000.
Services were held at Richardson’s Mortuary in Benson, Ariz., on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Burial followed at Holy Hope Cemetery in Tucson, Ariz.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Benson, Ariz.
Mrs. Rice was born July 18, 1913, in Harvey, Ill., a daughter of the late Nicholas and Flora (Copel) Woich.
She was employed as an office worker in the Chicago area.
She was married to Allen W. Rice in Harvey, Ill. He died Feb. 12, 1985.
They moved to the town of Stockton in 1949 and operated a dairy farm until their move to Tucson in 1972. She was employed at Sentry Insurance Co. for 10 years during that period.
They moved to Mescal Lakes, Ariz., in 1975 as some of the first residents and in 1997 a street in the community was named West Rice Road in their honor.
She was involved in community service activities in Tucson and Mescal Lakes, including many years of volunteer work for the Benson Hospital. She received recognition from the American Red Cross for having donated blood more than 100 times.
Survivors include four sons, Floyd (Ladda) Kahsen, Tucson, Charles (Muriel) Kahsen, Walnut Creek, Calif., and Dewaine (Connie) Rice and Allen (Marilyn) Rice, both of Mescal Lakes, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, including Vera (Ernest) Taylor, Stevens Pont; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Floyd.
