Grace M. Backaus, 85, Stevens Point, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at the Portage County Health Care Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Marshfield, with the Rev. Robert Brandt officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Marshfield.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hansen Funeral Home in Marshfield and from 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church until the services.
A memorial in her name will be established at a later date, and donations may be designated to the family in her name.
Mrs. Backaus was born March 27, 1915, in Marshfield, a daughter of the late Charles and Ella (Spearbecker) Sommers. She attended Marshfield schools.
She was married to Orlin H. Backaus on Aug. 20, 1935. He died Aug. 21, 1983.
They moved in 1964 to Stevens Point where her husband operated the Clark gas station on Clark Street.
She moved to Sheboygan in 1988 to live with her daughter, Marsha. She also lived in Fond du Lac and Butternut before returning to Stevens Point in November 1999.
Survivors include three sons, Richard (Nancy Jo), Neillsville, James (Elaine), Alexandria, Minn., and Stanley (Barbara Jo), Marshfield; four daughters, Marsha (Peter) DuFour, Butternut, Joan ( Edgar) Sherbenou, Austin, Texas, and Judy (Mark) Kostuhoski and Jean (Edward) Kruzitski, both of Stevens Point; one sister, Ruth Mehlbrecht, Wisconsin Rapids; 22 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Robert, on April 21, 1994; two brothers, Stanley and Lyle Sommers; and one grandson.
