The Rev. Walter R. Leininger, 81, Eau Claire, father of a Custer woman, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Eau Claire with the Rev. Rick Bridston officiating.
Private family services will be held in Stevens Point. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Memorials are established in his name for Christian Ministries in lieu of flowers.
The Rev. Leininger was born Jan. 22, 1919, in rural Binford, N.D., a son of the late John and Ida Leininger.
He attended Concordia Preparatory School in Milwaukee and graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo.
He was married to Ruth K. Knudson on June 29, 1947, in McVille, N.D.
He served as pastor of Lutheran congregations in Gillett, Wyo.; Bessemer, Mich.; Port Edwards, Wis.; Almena, Wis.; Clifton, N.J.; and Laurium, Mich. After 40 years of service, he retired in 1985.
While in Eau Claire, he volunteered for the Hmong community there.
Survivors include his wife, Eau Claire; three daughters, Kathryn (Greg) Wykhuis, Custer, Rebecca (Paul) Berndt, Hillsboro, Mo., and Judy (Christian) Meyer, Dittmer, Mo.; two sons, Mark and Timothy, both of Edwards, Colo; on sister, Alma Ramsey, Cooperstown, N.D.; one brother, Kenneth (Hazel), Binford, N.D.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
