Michael “Mike” Francis Sommers, 39, Madison, formerly of Custer, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, of metastatic melanoma.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 120 W. Johnson St., Madison.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church until the services. A luncheon will follow the Mass.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church cemetery in Polonia.
Ryan Funeral Home in Madison is assisting the family with services.
Mr. Sommers was born Jan. 15, 1961, in Appleton, a son of Raymond and Kathleen Sommers, Custer.
He graduated from Rosholt High School in 1979 and served in the Army National Guard from 1979 to 1984.
He attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Marquette University and graduated from UW-Madison with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering.
He was employed by the University of Wisconsin Rheology Research Department from 1985-87 and the city of Madison Traffic Engineering Department from 1987 through Feb. 24.
He held a brown belt in karate and amateur radio license KB9VSC.
Survivors include his parents, Custer; seven brothers, Theodore (Kathleen) and Christopher (Toni), both of Sacramento, Calif., Joseph (Terry), Muskego, Paul (Jane), Sheboygan; Peter (Patti), Franklin, Matthew (Laurie), Stevens Point, and Maximillian, Custer; six sisters, Jean (Gregory) Marchel, Junction City, Marie (Mark) Gilpatric, Milwaukee, Elizabeth Sommers, Alameda, Calif., Margaret (Kyle) McCarty, Wausau, Heidi (fiance Thomas Buckett) Sommers, Milwaukee, and Rachel Sommers, Marquette University; and his special friend Tipperat “Tippy” Hongpattarkere, Madison.
