Lloyd J. Phelps, 82, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Plover, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.
A memorial service is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Veterans Memorial Park in Plover by the Plover American Legion Post.
A memorial Mass was held at All Saints Catholic Church in Mesa, Ariz., on Jan. 24 and a memorial service was held the next day at the trailer park where he lived. Interment was at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Mesa, Ariz.
Mr. Phelps was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Stevens Point, a son of the late Jay and Daisy Phelps. They moved to Plover in 1932, and he continued to live there for nearly 60 years.
He was married to Clara S. Peplinski on June 13, 1939. She died June 17, 1996.
In 1997 he was married to Sylvia R. Loff. She survives.
He worked at Cash & Carry Lumber in Plover from about 1938 until 1956. He operated a building contractor business in Plover with Ed Sankey from 1956 to 1960. He was a rural mail carrier for the Plover Post Office from 1960 until he retired in 1979.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a charter member of Plover American Legion Post 543, belonging to the post more than 50 years.
He was a member of the Plover Volunteer Fire Department, beginning in the 1930s and serving for nearly 50 years in various capacities, including fire chief for many years.
He was a member of St. Bronislava Catholic Church in Plover until moving to Mesa, Ariz., where he was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.
Other survivors include two sons, Richard, Plano, Texas, and James, Greenfield; and six grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and Arthur.
