Robert G. Thompson, 69, Wisconsin Rapids, a Stevens Point native, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids. His wishes were to be cremated.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
A memorial in his name has been established at the United Methodist Church in Wisconsin Rapids.
Mr. Thompson was born Dec. 14, 1930, in Stevens Point, a son of Doris (Martin) Thompson and the late Francis Thompson.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954 with the 49th Engineering Company in Korea.
After service, he began working at Consolidated Papers Inc. as an electrician in the Wisconsin Rapids Division until retiring in 1993 after 39 years of service.
He was married to Nancy Murray on Aug. 28, 1954, and they lived in Stevens Point until moving to Wisconsin Rapids in 1960.
He was a member of Evergreen Lodge No. 128, Masons, and was a life member of VFW Post No. 9.
He and his wife and another couple started a local camping club, the Jack Pine Gypsies.
He was president of the first model airplane club in Wisconsin Rapids and was a member of the River Valley Flyers, the present model airplane club in Wisconsin Rapids.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Thomas (Sandra Hamilton), and Gary (Rhonda Maeder), both of Wisconsin Rapids; his mother, Stevens Point; two brothers, Kenneth (Patricia Huber), Stevens Point, and Donald, Las Vegas; and four grandchildren.
