Donald Edward Reutershan, 77, Sag Harbor, N.Y., a former Sentry Insurance executive and father of a Stevens Point woman, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Southhampton Hospital after a short illness.
Services were Monday at First Presbyterian Church of Sag Harbor.
In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate support of the First Presbyterian Church of Sag Harbor and Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Mr. Reutershan was born in Schoharie, N.Y., a son of the late Max Arthur and Ethel (Lewis) Reutershan. He attended Poughkeepsie High School and Hamilton College.
He service in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant from 1942-48.
He graduated cum laude with a LLB from Syracuse University College of Law in 1948 and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1949.
He was married to Ellen Domin of Williamstown, Mass., in 1945. She died in 1998.
He was an insurance executive from 1948 to 1987, serving as an executive vice president of Sentry Insurance Co., vice president counsel of Glens Falls Insurance Co., vice president and secretary of Continental Insurance Co., executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Northwestern National Insurance Group and the first president and chief executive officer of the New York Insurance Exchange when it was founded in 1980.
He served terms on the Glens Falls Board of Education, the New York State Teachers’ Retirement Board and the Sag Harbor Board of Education.
He was also a deacon of the Presbyterian Church in Glens Falls and an elder of Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church in Stevens Point and First Presbyterian Church of Sag Harbor.
Survivors include his second wife, Scott Navin Reutershan; two daughters, Robyn (Mike) Farmer, Stevens Point, and Meredith Salb, Norfolk, Va.; one stepdaughter, Lisa Piper Schmitt; five grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
