Gen (Mary Genevieve) Whalen, 80, 5418 Woodland St., died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at her residence. She was under the care of Hospice of Portage County.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Nativity Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa, with the Revs. Wayne Ressler and Charles W. Whalen officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hoffman-Schneider Funeral Home in Dubuque and at the funeral home from noon until the time of services Monday. There will be a wake service at 8 p.m. Sunday.
Pisarski/Dzikoski Funeral Home assisted the family with local arrangements.
Mrs. Whalen was born June 18, 1919, in Bluffton, Iowa, a daughter of the late George and Olive (Pidcock) Whalen.
She was married to John Whalen on Aug. 14, 1939, at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony, Minn.
She was co-publisher with her husband of weekly newspapers in Tyndall, S.D.; Nora Springs, Iowa; Poplar Bluff, Mo.; and Madelia, Minn.
She was a past president of the Newcomers Club and Holy Family Altar Society. She was a den mother and a 4-H leader and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, all of Mitchell, S.D.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mary Whalen, Stevens Point, and Kay (Pat) Boeckenstedt, Dyersville, Iowa; two sons, John (Peggy), Brookings, S.D., and Mike (Jane), Mankato, Minn; one sister, Lorraine McCabe, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Ann, and one granddaughter.
